Jim Marxen has nearly 25 years of experience working in the field of environmental communication and community capacity building. A former daily newspaper reporter and editor, he helped develop the first Cal/EPA Environmental Justice Action Plan and led the development of DTSC’s first Environmental Justice policy for public participation.
Marxen also played a key role in developing community participation in desert communities beset by cancer clusters, working with families to ensure they had access to information and experts in the field of toxicology and epidemiology. He also developed the statewide plan for informing communities during emergency off-highway releases of hazardous waste.
Taking the leadership role for the Office of Communication in November 2011, Marxen initiated efforts to improve DTSC’s electronic communications via its web site and social media tools. Increased use of video to illustrate the department’s commitment to improve the environment in communities throughout the state is also a key priority.
