Chemical Industry Challenge Project

Joint Pollution Prevention Challenge and Recognition

DTSC partnered with the Chemical Industry Council of California to encourage and promote multimedia pollution prevention in chemical facilities. In addition to potentially keeping hazardous waste from being created at all, the project represents an opportunity in which regulators and the regulated community build trust and gain credibility with each other. The collaborative project challenging California chemical facilities to reduce the amount waste created, promotes a Triple Bottom Line:

  • Good for the environment
  • Good for workers, their families, and surrounding communities
  • Good for business profitability and competitiveness

For this challenge project, measuring successful pollution prevention is not limited to hazardous waste reduction.  It also includes reducing pollution in other media, such as cutting back on air emissions and wastewater discharge.  Experts from DTSC and the Chemical Industry Council will help applicants achieve their pollution prevention goals.

You will find "How to Participate" information at California Chemical Industry Challenge 2006 and on our project poster. In addition, DTSC and the Council sent a joint letter to chemical facilities inviting them to participate and showcase their pollution prevention projects. DTSC and the Council will officially recognize facilities that demonstrate significant pollution prevention accomplishments. Facilities interested in participating must complete the application form.

DTSC's Office of Pollution Prevention and Technology Development is the lead on this project, being carried out as part of the larger effort directed by the Legislature.
