Green Chemistry Initiative
Green Chemistry is a leading edge of science and business that emphasizes safer products and healthier lives by reducing and eliminating use of toxic chemicals. Green Chemistry promises a new generation of safer substitutes for hazardous ingredients, renewable raw materials for everyday products and chemicals that don’t persist in the environment at the end of their lifecycles.
Green Chemistry is sometimes described as a third wave of environmental protection, building on John Muir’s late 19th Century conservation movement and Rachel Carson’s 1960s call for stronger chemical regulation. Simply put, it shifts emphasis in product manufacturing to the design phase to make sure items for consumption are safe and sustainable before they enter the marketplace.
California’s Green Chemistry Initiative aims to stimulate a new consumer products economy that designs, manufactures and uses safer toxic-free processes and products.
