Welcome to the Department of Toxic Substances Control

Draft Regulation Workshops

Pictures from Draft Regulation Workshops. On July 7 and 8, 2010, the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) held two days of workshops to discuss the newly released draft Regulation for Safer Consumer Products. As part of California’s Green Chemistry Initiative, the regulation sets up a system to remove chemicals of concern from everyday products and provides a process to replace them with safer alternative chemicals.

The workshops gave the public a chance to have a face-to-face question-and-answer session with DTSC Chief Scientist Jeff Wong and DTSC Acting Chief Deputy Director Odette Madriago. The questions came from a variety of business and environmental organizations.  They covered everything from the way chemicals of concern are defined to the responsibilities that will be placed on businesses.

“We use these workshops to interact with our stakeholders in a number of other venues to interact with our stakeholders," said Madriago, "[and] hopefully address any misconceptions they may have and help them to understand the fundamental need and purpose behind the regulations.”

As the regulation makes its way through the offical rulemaking process, DTSC will consider all comments received and may revise the draft regulation. DTSC expects the formal Administrative Procedure Act (APA) rulemaking process to begin in late summer 2010.
