Pollution Prevention & Green Technology

DTSC's Pollution Prevention (P2) efforts include delivering guidance to businesses on implementing pollution prevention principles to help generate less solid and hazardous waste, using fewer toxic chemicals, conserving water and energy, and reducing air pollution. The Department supports the development and demonstration of innovative new technologies to treat, recycle, clean up, eliminate, or reduce hazardous waste.

Pollution prevention and green technologies are intended to reduce the burden of cleaning up contaminated sites across California by reducing the sources of pollution through education and process improvements. The Department's first Green Chemistry program, Safer Consumer Products, takes Pollution Prevention one step further, asking manufacturers if the chemicals they are using are necessary and if there is a safer alternative.
