DTSC is investigating or cleaning up more than 1,000 sites in California where hazardous materials have contaminated soil, soil gas, groundwater or surface water. DTSC prevents harm to people and the environment at these former industrial plants, military bases, businesses and landfills polluted from previous land uses.

Safeguarding Communities

DTSC ensures that hazardous waste and hazardous materials are safely managed in California, and guards against accidental releases that threaten the public and environment.  DTSC ensures compliance by issuing permits, inspecting facilities and registering hazardous waste transporters.
